Choi is my favourite South East Asian photographer. I have poured over his awesome images time and time again and am excited to be able to include so many in the film, DVD artwork, and bring you some additional ones here.
To me, the beauty of his photo’s is not in their technicality, but their ability to capture emotion and great moments. Choi certainly abides by the photographer’s adage, “If it is a bad photo, then you weren’t close enough”. I have seen lots of video footage and photos in researching The Other Option where you can spot Choi buried deep in the pit or pressed hard in between the band and side stage. He gets right in there, and in South East Asia with so much frenetic energy going on in such small spaces, the fact he pulls off such great captures is a credit to him.
Choi is also an active member in many other ways in the Kuala Lumpur scene. Like many, he has faced considerable challenges this year, more than any other photographer I know of here in Australia.
Thank you so much for your contribution Choi. The Other Option is greater for your amazing art. To see more of Choi’s incredible work in the context of Australian Punk and Hardcore in South East Asia, order The Other Option here. Or visit his blog here.
